Körper-Bauernhof findet Haus

The San Marcos body farm has finally found a home on the Freeman Ranch, leased to Texas State University. A body farm is a forensic anthropology site that is used to study bodies buried under different conditions: on the surface, at different depths, in a car trunk, under water, taking into account variables such as time of year and weather conditions.

The TV series, Bones, is about Temperance Brennan, a highly skilled forensic anthropologist who works at the Jeffersonian Institute in Washington, DC.Texas State University-San Marcos has their own Bones, Dr. Melbye, who is an expert in the field of physical anthropology with specialization in human skeletal biology. Dr. Melbye is the director of The Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State, Department of Anthropology.

Not that the Body Farm will be a hot tourist spot, but it is something of interest and provides a necessary service to students of forensic anthropology. It will also give Dr. Melbye a place to put all the bones that are sent to him by law enforcement officials.

Right Reading for RVers Revisited

Last July, I wrote a post on FEMA trailers and formaldehyde. In the article, which you may read here, I cited many sources stating that formaldehyde was a true problem.

From that July 2007 post:

Our Government at Work FEMA trailers are toxic to the people living in them. FEMA has known about the formaldehyde outgassing problem since 2006, but have not taken action except when people complained. FEMA is now the target of a class-action lawsuit, as they should be. Formaldehyde outgasses in high heat and humidity, so we put flood victims from the Gulf Coast in them? Why?

News Sources for July 2007 post:

Mardi Gras Overshadowed by Toxic Trailers

Today, well over a year later, Feds Deem FEMA Trailers Unsafe, Hand Out More - New Orleans News Story - WDSU New Orleans

From the article:

Meanwhile, in Little Rock, Ark. FEMA said it will continue with distribution of mobile homes to Arkansas and Tennessee tornado victims despite a CDC finding of high formaldehyde levels in other trailers.

 : : Shame on You, FEMA! : :

And God help all who are in the hands of the American  government.  If you are poor, you will be mistreated.  No doubt about it.

IZEARanks for Bloggers Only

Anyone who blogs knows about the smack-down given to bloggers by one of the major search engines in December, right before Christmas. Three of my blogs that were page rank 4 reduced to page rank 0. Nothing else changed. The amount of traffic to my blogs remained the same, including the traffic sent by the search engine responsible for the problem.

The folks at IZEARanks developed their own ranking system, based on unique visitors and pages views. You now have an alternative for blog ranking based on data. Your blog rank is compared nightly to the ranks of other bloggers all over the world. So, you now may have IZEARank versus Page Rank, Alexa Rank or comSCORE Rank.

This means real data is used instead of esoteric ranking algorithms, tool bar extrapolations or proprietary database magic. No one will be able to strip IZEARank from your blog.

How Do I Sign Up for Real Rank?

Go to IZEARanks.com

  1. Register for IZEARanks;
  2. verify your email address;
  3. add your blog to the IZEARanks system;
  4. get the IZEA tool kit code (javascript);
  5. add IZEA tool kit code to your blog;
  6. return to IZEARanks to get the blog claim code (javascript);
  7. add blog claim code to your blog;
  8. return to the site and claim your blog.

Screenshot of IZEARanks account page

If all is well, you will see a screenshot like the one above with green check marks. That all it takes to get started! In 24 hours, you will have IZEARank. You may add the ITK and claim code to all your blogs as I have done.

IZEA Ranks screenshot
Above is a screenshot showing IZEARank. You may also see unique visitors and page views by using the drop-down menu. You will notice the green trend line, showing that blog rank is increasing over a week. You may adjust the time-line by using the light-bulb at the top of the page.

Simple, easy and accurate. That is IZEARank.  Now, we can all get back to blogging.

Mountain Lion Bites Volunteer

The Capital of Texas (COT) Zoo in Cedar Park is perfectly safe. I just want to say that before I talk of another volunteer who fed the mountain lion and then put her hand back in the cage to pet the big kitty.

Mountain Lion at COT Zoo.

See more pictures on the COT Zoo site.

The lion bit her hand and would not let go. The volunteer had a cell phone and called 911. It took forever for the dispatcher to get the volunteer calmed down enough to hear that a mountain lion had her hand in its mouth. If you want to hear this poor woman shriek, you may hear it on FOX Austin. The woman had a broken bone in her hand and some deep puncture wounds. The mountain lion was never loose, it never left its cage.

This is the second volunteer that was bitten by a mountain lion at the zoo. As you know, we should never get between an animal and its food. This means feed an animal and back away. Any move toward its food can be misconstrued as a threat. This is natural and normal for all animals, including dogs. Teach your children about this.

Hours The zoo is open everyday (10 am-530 pm) during the summer. Call for winter hours.

Admission

  • Teen and Adult (12 & up) $6.99
  • Children (2-11) $4.49
  • Toddlers (under 2) free
  • Family one-year membership $49.00

Membership in the Capital of Texas Zoological Association gives you and your family FREE admission to the zoo, including members-only events, and many more benefits! Buy a membership today!

Location and Directions
The address of the Capital of Texas Zoo:
376A Jenkins Road
Cedar Creek, TX 78612
(512) 303-6675

Located off of SR 71, 12 miles east of the Austin Bergstrom Airport. The final roads to the zoo (South Pope Bend and Jenkins road) are unpaved rural roads, so drive carefully.

Information

The zoo always is in need of volunteers and members:

Volunteers are essential to the Capital of Texas Zoo. They assist zoo staff in most aspects of zoo operations and support the zoo in our mission to create a sustainable future for wildlife. If you are dedicated to wildlife conservation and want to put this dedication into practice, we invite you to consider volunteering at Capital of Texas Zoo.
