Willie Nelson Asks for Help for Farmers

Willie has always been an friend to farmers, starting with the first annual Farm Aid concert in 1985. Willie Nelson is asking for help for the farmers who have been effected by the flooding in the midwest.

Please read his heartfelt plea on his official website. From the website:

Farm Aid is working now with local farm groups, churches, and rural organizations to get emergency funds out quickly to flooded farmers. Today we made our first grant of $10,000 to a local Iowa farm organization to provide emergency assistance to farmers in need right now.

Funny how Farm Aid can get help to the farmers faster than FEMA . . .

Please Help Burma

Map of Burma / Myanmar

On May 2 and 3, 2008, Cyclone Nargis tore through Burma, also known as Myanmar. More than 22,000 people died, 41,000 are missing, and over one million are homeless.

In the city of Rangoon, a city of over 5 million, the hospitals were leveled and sources of drinking water ruined. The cyclone-related storm surge devastated the Irrawaddy delta, the area’s main rice growing region. Food prices have already doubled.

The political situation in Burma / Myanmar is troublesome to the relief effort. Workers for the United Nations are still waiting for entry visas. Volunteer movements are restricted. Oppression and poverty will prevent the people of Burma from recovering from this cyclone, likened to Hurricane Katrina, without aid.

Be a part of the first-line response to Cyclone Nargis in Burma. Click here to donate $25.  Thank you!

Too Much Autism Awareness

When I was younger, I worked with adults with disabilities.  I had heard rumors of an environmental (versus genetic) cause of autism.  I researched this topic on the Internet and I was directed to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s website and a document called Tobacco Science and the Thimerosal Scandal.  This is a research paper that changed my life.

I have written a post for Autism Awareness Month on my other blog, Endangered Spaces.  If you have a strong stomach and an interest in autism and other neurological deficits, please read it.  If it resonates as truth with you, please click through and read the 66-page research paper by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

It will break your heart . . .

Save a Red Bus for Christmas

I have blogger friends named Matthew and Sue who have a dream of saving one old green bus, an AEC Regent Low Height built in the early 1950’s. Please click here to read about their dream.

outside picture of 1948 Leyland PD-1 double-deckerThrough Matthew and Sue, I heard of someone hoping to sell the 1948 Leyland PD-1 double-decker pictured above and below. The owner is asking $2,200 for the bus because he is losing his storage space, he does NOT sell it; if not, he will be forced to scrap the vehicle.

inside picture of 1948 Leyland PD-1 double-deckerLooking at the inside, I can imagine a double decker RV. What a wonderful travel vehicle this would make for someone that could do the work. The inside looks clean and it is already stripped and ready for remake. If you or someone you know might like to take this project on, please click here to visit the Buses for Sale page of the British Bus Club. Page down to the bottom for more pictures and contact information. The bus is currently located in Sycamore IL, about 90 miles due west of Chicago.

Three years of fighting in Darfur have destroyed hundreds of villages, displaced 2.2 million and led to more than 400,000 deaths. President Bush has accused the government of Sudan of genocide, but the U.S. has taken few concrete actions to stop the fighting.

Endless Hunger for children in Darfur

DEAD, DYING, DISPLACED: children, women,
men, elders, families, complete villages . . .

Darfur is the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century. Not since the Rwandan genocide of 1994 has the world seen such a calculated campaign of displacement, starvation, rape and mass slaughter. The ongoing devastation has killed an estimated 400,000 and displaced over 2.5 million Sudanese since February 2003.

Young Girl Faces Rape in Darfur

Please Help Darfur

In Darfur, hundreds of people a day are raped, starved and murdered by the Sudanese armed forces and a Sudanese government-backed militia known as the Janjaweed.

The United Nations Security Council authorized that peacekeepers be deployed to Darfur, but the Sudanese government has not yet allowed them entry.

Meanwhile, the calculated campaign of displacement, starvation, rape, and mass slaughter continues . . . until we do something!

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has joined with Google in an unprecedented online mapping initiative. Crisis in Darfur enables more than 200 million Google Earth users worldwide to visualize and better understand the genocide currently unfolding in Darfur.
