* Stars * Meteors * Stars

We journeyed out to Lockhart State Park for two nights to see the Perseid showers. I thought we would have better luck out in the country than close to San Marcos where we live.

However, I did not count on the city lights of Lockhart being so bright, nor did I consider that the airport would have a rotating search light shining up at the sky all night long. There were just enough clouds that when the light hit them, they glowed and blocked night vision except for directly overhead.

Despite the lights, we did see a great many Perseid meteors at about 4 am on Monday morning. Not as many as I would have liked, but they were beautiful. Streaking across the sky, sometimes two at once, we were “ooohing and aaahing” for hours.

On Tuesday morning, the meteor count was less, but still amazing. Mars was bright red and rose with the meteor shower. I was hoping for the meteor- a-minute that a dark sky would show, but it was not to be.

Next time, I will just have to go west into the desert.

Perfect Star Watching Weather

I am so excited. The weather is clear and I have gotten reservations at Lockhart State Park, which is about as far from city lights as we can get in the time we have left today.

We will be spending tonight in lawn chairs, with our eyes, binoculars and camera. Eyes to the northeast at sundown for the Earth grazers. Then we will be back out after midnight to see the highlight of the Perseid shower.

Double bonus of Mars rising in the dawn sky.

It is a good day to be alive.

Perseid meteors peak August 12-13, 2007

Perseids (2007)

The meteors fly August 12/13, when the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak. Observers at a dark site should average a “falling star” each minute. Astronomy: Roen Kelly [larger image]

Visit Astronomy.com website for more information.

The show begins between 9-10 pm on Sunday, August 12th, when Perseus rises in the northeast. Look for Perseid Earth grazers; meteors that approach from the horizon and skim the atmosphere overhead like a stone skipping the surface of a pond.

You may also want to check out NASA for more information, especially about Mars being visible as well:

It’s something to think about at four in the morning, with Mars rising in the east, meteors flitting across the sky, and a summer breeze rustling the legs of your pajamas.
