Baptism on San Marcos River

It was pretty amazing. All the family came by and apologized to us for taking over the rock on which we were sitting. We had big smiles on our faces and we kept saying, “No. Thanks! We enjoyed it.”You never know what might happen when you visit the San Marcos River. I did not know some people choose to be baptized in the San Marcos River. I may have to start checking the river on Sundays to see what I am missing.

Take me to the River

I haven’t seen the worst of it yet
I wanna know, can you tell me
I’d really like to stay

Take me to the river
Drop me in the water
Take me to the river
Dip me in the water
Wash me down, wash me down
Wash me down, wash me down

I don’t know why you treat me so bad
Think of all the things that we could have had
Love is an ocean And I can’t forget my sweet sixteen
I’ll never fret
I wanna know, can you tell me
I’d really like to stay

Take me to the river
Drop me in the water
Take me to the river
Dip me in the water
Love me, squeeze me
Love me, tease me
Till I can’t, till I can’t
Till I can’t, till I can’t

I don’t know why I love you like I do
All the trouble you put me through
Sixteen candles blowin’ on the wall
And here I am the bigg’st fool of all
I wanna know, can you tell me
I’d really like to stay

Take me to the river
Drop me in the water - come on, come on, come on yea…
Dip me in the water
Drop me in the river - come on, come on…
Dip me in the water
Drop me in the river
Push me in the water…

Olympic Team Trials Qualifier, San Marcos, Texas

I wanted to clear up my error in my last post. The race that was held 2/17 at Rio Vista Park was the Olympic Team Trials Qualifier and not the final Olympic Team Trials that will take place later this spring.

Olympic Team Trials Qualifier Course1

Beginning of Kayak Race Course

The US Canoe & Kayak (USACK) board awarded Red River Racing Team a 2008 Olympic Team Trials Qualifier. Some of the best racers in the country came to San Marcos on the road to becoming part of the Olympic Team! The top 3-4 placing finishers in each of the 4 categories (K1, K1W, C-1 and C-2) will go on to compete in the Olympic Team Trials April 26-28th in Charlotte North Carolina!

2nd Chute Kayak Course

Second Chute of Kayak Course

We saw some serious kayaking on Sunday. The gates hanging down are either green or red. You have to go through the green gates with the flow of the water, downstream. You must go through the red gates against the flow of the water, upstream. You must go through the gates in order and if you hit one of the poles, it is a 2-second penalty. If you go through a gate out of order, all the gates you missed are “dead gates” and cost you 90-seconds each.

Olympic Team Trials Qualifier Course2

Lower 2/3 of Kayak Course

It was a beautiful sunny day and we enjoyed watching these kayakers. Some were young, some were old, some were robust and in the prime of their life. They were all athletes, serious athletes. The water flow was probably between 200-300 cubic feet per second.

Upstream

Stop and Paddle Upstream

Stop and Turn on a Dime

Turn on a Dime

I have always wondered about the purpose of those poles (gates) that hang over the water. Now I know. They are to confound and disappoint kayakers both coming and going. . . LOL.You do not have to be an olympian to have fun on the San Marcos River. The San Marcos River flows directly through town. Visit the website of the San Marcos River Foundation, for information on the San Marcos River.

Tomorrow on Sunday, February 17, the San Marcos Falls at Rio Vista Park will be the site of the Olympic Kayaking Trials. Today was rainy and cool, but the kayakers were out there practicing while the promoters were modifying the course. Trials start at 10 am tomorrow and should be over about 2 pm.

Tomorrow should be mild and sunny. A perfect day for the river. Come on down to San Marcos. Here is a map.

World Class Birding in Texas

Rio Grande Valley

The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas is a world-class birding spot. Follow the path of the Rio Grande River, from resacas to riverine woodlands, from arid chaparral to coastal prairie to coastal wetlands (west to east), and from temperate farmlands to subtropical climes (north to south).

The Mississippi and the Central flyways, join in the spring and diverge in the fall just north of the RGV. These flyways serve as a funnel for all types of feathered visitors into the avian wonderland that is the Rio Grande Valley.

Click to read article about birding in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) by seasons.

The World Birding Center

Over 10,000 acres are planned to become part of the WBC, helping to protect native habitat while increasing the understanding and appreciation of the birds and wildlife.

Currently, The World Birding Center is a network of nine sites strung along 120 miles of road from South Padre Island to Roma, Texas. The habitats are as diverse as the sites, which makes this the richest birding area north of the border.

World Birding Center

  • Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park-762 acres of wilderness and headquarters of WBC
  • Edinburg Scenic Wetlands-oasis for water-loving birds and butterflies
  • Estero Llano Grande State Park-almost 200 acres of wetlands
  • Harlingen Arroyo Colorado-55 acres of Texas Ebony woodlands meet 40 acres of mixed upland thorn forest
  • Old Hidalgo Pumphouse-historic museum planted with hummingbird gardens
  • Quinta Mazatlan-historic Spanish Revival adobe hacienda surrounded by lush tropical landscaping and native woodlands
  • Resaca de la Palma State Park-1700 semi- tropical acres
  • Roma Bluffs-riverside nature area of three acres is part of a national historic district
  • South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center-50 acres of dune meadows, salt marsh and intertidal flats, thickets of native shrubs and trees

For birding checklists for each of the sites above, please visit the WBC.
