Close Your Eyes and Imagine . . .

. . . it is sunny, but there is a gentle breeze blowing off the water. You are lying in a hammock under a palm shade shelter sipping an ice cold drink. The turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea gently break on a white sand beach, just footsteps away. . . Where in the world are you? You are in Cancun, a great vacation spot on the tip of the Yucatan Pennisula in Mexico.

Beginning May 1, you may fly directly from Austin, Texas to Cancun, Mexico for as little as $9.99 on vivaAerobus. Now, I must tell you that after they add departure and airport fees to your fare, you are looking at over $140 one way, which is still a good fare.

The Cancun that you will visit has two zones. There is the city where the natives live and then there is the hotel zone, a 14-mile long island where some world-class hotels stand over the most pristine beaches in the world, overlooking the Caribbean. The lagoon, between mainland and the island is perfect setting for jet skiing or other water sports. Spend your days on the beach or take a ferry to Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) to spend the day looking at ruins.

If you are thinking of sun and fun this winter, visit HotelsByCity.net, where you may find cheap hotels and guides to each destination. For instance, I found hotels for $54 USD per night, all-inclusive hotels for just over $300 per night, with $100 resort credits per day. There are adult-only and family-oriented hotels, so you will be sure to find exactly what you need.

Valentine’s Day Holiday

I am always looking at travel sites, dreaming of the vacations I would take if money and time were no barrier to travel. While browsing, I found Holiday-Rentals and started looking at their Valentine’s Day Holiday page.

I was daydreaming about a Caribbean romance for Valentine’s Day. Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St Lucia Trinidad & Tobago are just some of the destinations from which you may choose. Imagine visiting a tropical island and snorkeling in the warm sea while everyone at home is bundled up for blizzards.

A romantic Valentine’s holiday to Lake Como, Italy sounds wonderful to me. Some other destinations in Italy you may choose are Campania, Lombardy, Rome, Sardinia, Tuscany or Venice. Spending a week or so in any one of these beautiful and historic locations would be a wonderful treat.

Holiday-Rentals has the largest selection of holiday homes available to rent direct from the owners, saving you up to 40 percent in fees. Staying at someone’s home offers an authentic cultural experience, great personal comfort and an excellent value.

There are over 45,000 rentals on the website. From cottages to villas, from condos on the beach to cabins in the mountains, you will find the perfect rental using the robust search engine on the site.

So, where are you going on your Valentine’s Day holiday?

Washington, D.C. is just one of the more than 20 destinations that are part of the Trusted Travel and Attractions network of cities. I would recommend the Odyssey Dinner Cruise on the Potomac River. It has been years since I took this tour, but I will never forget cruising along the river, with all the landmarks of Washington, D.C. highlighted against the night sky and reflected in the flowing water.

The cruise is three hours in length and you will enjoy a wonderful dinner that includes appetizer, first course, main course and dessert, with a selection of wines, if you like. After dinner, there is dancing with a live band, or you may just sit and relax as the historical scenery passes by your window. This cruise gave me a real sense of history and my place in it.

Jacket is required for men and women should dress for cocktails.
