Radiant sky map for Orionids

As comets orbit the Sun, they shed an icy, dusty debris stream. If Earth travels through this stream, we see a meteor shower. Where Earth and the stream meet causes the meteors to appear to fall from a place in the sky, a spot in the call the radiant. If the radiant is close to a constellation, the meteor shower will be named for the constellation.

To best view a meteor shower, drive away from the glow of city lights and toward the constellation from which the meteors will appear to radiate. When you have found the perfect viewing area, lie back or position yourself so the horizon appears at the edge of your peripheral vision, with the stars and sky filling your field of view. Meteors will instantly grab your attention as they streak by.
