One of the Best Things That Ever Happened to Me
Do you remember the song, The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me, by Roberta Flack? I still remember some of the lyrics:
If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Oh, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory
‘Cause you’re the best thing that ever happened to me
Is there someone in your life about whom you feel the same? A mentor, a teacher, a coach, a professor, a volunteer? Someone who expressed an interest in your life, took the extra time to teach you something, or did something for you that was unexpected?
I remember a teacher at Central Texas College @ Austin, Mr. Ward. I was 18 years old, a high school dropout, attending a vocational school while waiting to receive my GED scores. He was nice and helpful as a teacher. However, one day he asked me to stay after class and talk with him. He offered to help me receive a scholarship to Central Texas College @ Killeen. He talked about my intelligence, how quickly I learned computer programming and the opp0rtunities for someone like me IF I had a college education.
I thanked him, but I did not tell him how much his support meant to me. Bouyed by his confidence in me, I went to the University of Texas @ Austin campus with my GED scores and secured a scholarship. A few months later, I went back to the CTC @ Austin campus and the school was gone. I was never able to tell him, “Thank you for having faith in me.”
