Vaya Con Dios, My Fluffy Friend

March 12th 2008 03:15 pm

We lost our best friend yesterday. Rags, the finest dog I have ever known, passed on at approximately 4 PM. He gallantly struggled against his failing body, but his body won. I feel like my heart has been torn from my body and that I will never be able to breathe again without pain.

My dog, Rags, a terrier mix

A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself. Josh Billings (1818 - 1885)

I may offline for a few days, as I learn to live without my fluffly little dog. Say a prayer that he finds his way to where all good dogs go.

Ah, I know that pain all too well. Rags is already in that beautiful, special place waiting for you & watching over you until your arrival. He lives on there and in your heart. Blessings to you as you enter this new chapter in your life. Perhaps there is another loving, furry friend in your future? Keep your heart open to the possibility. I have said “no more” many times only to adopt another one!

When I was a kid, I had a dog that was close to me that people gave it my name. I never had any dog as a personal companion after her. I’d imagine Rags passed on happy and contented, knowing he was loved till the very end…

Our sincerest condolences… As you know, we have two boys of our own… and just thinking about one of them going is awful… but inevitable…

Science has shown losing a beloved pet is as bad, stress wise, as losing a close relative… so the best I can give you as a suggestion is think on Rags with happiness and remember the joy you shared… You’ll meet again, somewhere and somehow…

I cannot imagine the day when she will not be with me. She has been my companion through some really rough times in life. I will enjoy her love and affection today and cherish it more after thinking of Rags. Just remember the good times and how Rags would make you smile.

There are no words to describe the absence you are experiencing. Know that Rags lived a good, long life, loved you, and was loved by you… you can’t ask for more than that. Peace to you.

I am sorry to hear of your loss. So often the grief that comes with the death of a little animal friend is dismissed as ‘not real grief’. But it’s real alright.

I have dedicated a post to you with a poem from James Dickey, a poem that gave me some solace a few weeks back when a dear companion of mine, an old cat who had spent 17 years with me, passed on. I hope it gives you a little comfort as it did for me.

I didn’t grow up with dogs and just recently got my first one about 8 months ago… I honestly can say I absolutely LOVE and adore my buddy… We understand each other and the quote is so true… He’s so insanely in-love with me that it makes me love him even more. I couldn’t imagine losing him, =(

I hope you heal quickly and love another furry friend soon…

I think you should stay online during this sad time because you will get lots of support and know that there are a lot of folks out there that can really feel your pain. I am so sorry for your loss, and I am dreading the day I have to share this pain too. Please stop by and visit my site and read “Old Dog Syndrome” that I just happened to post this week.

I can’t imagine what it must feel like - I am so sorry for your loss. I am already scared of losing my Sunshine - she’s been by my side through thick and thin.

When a friend’s pet died, someone sent him this poem, and I hope that it brings you some comfort.

    Rainbow Bridge (Poem)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

My heart goes out to you in your loss of your dog. He was truly beautiful. We lost our young cat Fritz on March 15th very suddenly, and are dealing with the same feelings you describe. I also felt like I couldn’t breathe, like I was having a panic attack, it hurt so much. Only time will heal our pain and soften the loss we are feeling. You will be in my thoughts.

I hurt for you! Pets truly become part of the family. One of mine is getting up in years and I know I will be heart-sick when he goes. When I was a child and our dog died, my mom and I laid in bed and ate Oreos all day. I have bitter sweet memories of that now, because I had someone to share the pain with. It looks like you have many visitors to your site that want to share your pain. Another dog will ever replace the one you lost, but it might help a little to fill a void.
