Sir Gordon Slays the Dragon of Ennui
Causes, Remember August 1st, 2007Finally, a world leader of whom everyone can be proud. The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown, made ending the genocide in Darfur a foreign policy priority. He made it happen.
Prime Minister Gordon, with the support of French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, and US President, George Bush, ended the ennui over Darfur that has gripped the UN Security Council of late. Since 2003, over 200 thousand people have died and over two million have lost everything in Darfur.
The UN Security Council voted unanimously on July 31 to deploy a 26,000-strong international force to Darfur. This is not the end of the genocide, but at least meaningful action is in sight.
Thank you, Mr. Gordon! This is a fine thing you have done. May God bless you and the Queen knight you.
Brown close to breakthrough on international force for Darfur | The Guardian | Guardian Unlimited- read the article
From the article:
The vote was passed unanimously after China, the Sudanese government’s main defender at the UN, dropped its objections. British officials said that China’s oil interests in Sudan were eventually outweighed by anxiety about a possible international human rights backlash over Darfur aimed at next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing.
