Port O’Connor is known as a fisherman’s paradise. It is also a small, clean and friendly beach town that is off the beaten path. There are bay and gulf areas and pristine undeveloped estuaries like Powderhorn Lake, Coloma Creek, Pringle Lake and Conti Lake.Sundown Island, also known locally as Bird Island, is the home of at least 18 species of birds, such as snowy egrets, scarlet ibis, roseate spoonbills, reddish egrets, great blue herons, cormorants, oyster catchers, black skimmers, white-faced ibis and a variety of gulls and terns. The island is also one of the few brown pelican rookeries on the Texas Gulf Coast. You view Sundown Island from a boat out of Port O’Connor.
From Port O’Connor, you may also catch a ride to Matagorda Island or to San Jose Island, both barrier islands without commercial development. When you sit facing the Gulf, you can imagine the Texas Gulf Coast as it once was, before oil rigs, condominium development and human intervention.
