About midnight June 27, best friends Bradley McMellon and Paul Slinkard left Marble Falls, Texas, for the 40-mile drive home to Leander. Both men had been in Marble Falls visiting McMellon’s girlfriend.

Both the girlfriend and the mother of the girlfriend asked them to stay the night. The weather was bad and getting worse. Over fourteen inches of rain would fall that night.

Bradley said he had to get back so he could go to work the next morning. The men set out in Brad’s Jeep Cherokee.

They drove about 12 miles on RM 1431 before they went around a curve and hit Hickory Creek. No one will ever know exactly what happened.

On Saturday, July 7, a body was pulled from Lake Travis. Clothing and a tattoo lead authorities to believe the body is Bradley McMellon. They have not found Paul, yet.

Both Bradley and Paul grew up in Central Texas and knew better than to drive during a flash flood. Now, they are both dead at 20.

God bless you, boys. I hope you did not suffer.

Nothing is worth your life. Do not cross roads with water flowing over them. Do not drive in the dark on roads with low water crossings. Do not risk your life and the heart and soul of your loved ones when they are called to identify your body.
