Driving Through Geologic History

We were all over the Hill Country yesterday. We drove through Bandera to Medina and then took FM 337 all the way to Camp Wood. What a beautiful drive. Roller coaster country road, deep canyons, hundreds of stream crossings and no traffic. The three canyons were carved by the Sabinal, Frio and Nueces Rivers. The Nueces River is pictured above. The rocks in this region are early Cretaceous, formed during millions of years when much of Texas was covered by warm shallow seas. The Glen Rose formation is a crumbly mixture of limestone, shale, marl and siltstone. This is the formation in which you will find dinosaur tracks. After the dinosaurs were gone, the seas spread over Texas and Edwards limestone, a harder marine limestone, was laid down over the Glen Rose limestone.

About ten million years ago, this entire area was uplifted several thousand feet. As you drive through the canyons, you see the layers of limestone exposed by the action of water and men. Lost Maples State Natural Area and Garner State Park are both ideal places to view the geology of the area. On top of the canyons are Edwards limestone, with Glen Rose exposed on lower canyon walls and in the stream beds.

From the looks of the pictures it looks like a lovely area. Perhaps I will get to see it someday.

@lynn corncroper-Thanks for stopping by. I am afraid to comment on 100 blogs. It might be considered spam. Good luck with it!
