Sunken Gardens in Zilker Park
Gardens and Tours, Historic travel, Nature, Rivers June 12th, 2007This pool is spring fed by the Edwards Aquifer. In the 1970s, when I first saw this pool, the water level was much higher and you could swim in the cool waters. The next time I saw this pool was in the 1990s, when the pool was empty with a muddy bottom. This weekend, first weekend in June 2007, it was great to see the springs freely flowing.
Unfortunately, due to age of the stone structures and safety issues, the area is encircled by wrought iron bars. It is a wonderful place just to sit and listen to the sound of water running and falling. Instant peace!
Above is the drop as the spring-fed stream crosses under a suspension bridge, where it joins Barton Creek on its way to Town Lake. This is where the State releases Rainbow Trout during the winter.
Barton Springs spillway shows the powerful force of the water. This area is a favorite of dog lovers, and it is free. When we were young, my sister and I used to wade out and hold onto chains that were in each spillway. The area is much rougher and swimming is not allowed here any longer.
Just downstream, you may rent canoes and kayaks. Then you paddle out to Town Lake. The view of Austin from Town Lake is awesome.

How beautiful! We’re going to be down near Lake Travis later this year visiting my in-laws. I’ll make a point of stopping to see the Aquifer and Barton Creek while we’re there.

I have really enjoyed reading this blog for some time and all the pictures on it. I wanted to personally invite you to participate in my Soda-Club contest, you could win a soda club home soda maker for the RV travel. It would be a great item for the road. The contest ends tomorrow.
