Many people do not know that Texas has many premiere wine grape growing areas and that a Texan actually saved the French Wine industry.

In the late 1800’s, the transplanting of vines from European & American vines, resulted in the devastation of the French vineyards. This blight was caused by Phylloxera, a louse that invades the root system of the grape vines.Thomas V. Munson, a Texas agriculturist who experimented with cultivation of over 300 grape varieties. He provided an improved, more resistant root stock onto which the French could graft their vines. For this accomplishment, T.V. Munson was given the Legion of Merit, their highest civilian award.

The Texas Hill Country Wine Trail is a great way to discover Texas wines. If you visit the Texas Hill Country Wineries website, you can view a map and plan your trip.
