Please Help Me Identify These Birds

CyberCelt | February 18, 2006 in Uncategorized | Comments (1)

We saw these birds (ducks or geese) at Medina Lake on our last trip. They had pink legs, a black mask and red eyes. I have been looking at bird books and websites to find them, but I have just about given up. I thought I would post them here and see if a kind blogger might know what in the world they are.

If you have a guess, please leave a comment. They were pretty strange looking and did not hang out with all the other ducks.

Thanks!

Eileen

Wow, you’ve stumped my husband and I. Do you have any additional photos? It’s hard to make out the face and beak/bill real well.

I have no real guess. I thought for a moment it might be a juvenile form of one of the whistling duck species, but when I looked up fulvous whistling duck and (the slightly more common, in our area) black-bellied whistling duck are not dead-ringers for what you’ve photographed. You might want to send an email to the San Antonio Audubon Society to see if one of their birders can ID for you. I’m not an ace birder, by any means. Wish I was! :)
