Redfish Cup Held This Weekend in Texas

Hurricane Rita postponed the $130,000 Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup Tournament Championship. The event, held in South Padre Island, is going on now, and will continue until Sunday. Drive down to South Padre and celebrate the the national championship premiere redfish event of the year. Check out the Destination RV Resort and FishBones Pier & Grill while you bask in the sunshine of the Texas coast.

Have a great weekend. Keep your wheels on the road.

Veterans Day and Remembrance Day

Just wanted to pause and think of the men and women all over the free world who have sacrificed their lives so that I might exist today. You are the true heroes of my story, my life, my children.

I also wanted to thank the young people that stand vigil today so that I might live free to die of old age. God bless you Bravehearts in the Middle East.

Help USA Endangered Species Today

In late September, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would cripple the Endangered Species Act. The Senate can act more responsibly and show that conservation and development need not be at odds. The Endangered Species Act is critical to the recovery of imperiled wildlife. The Senate has rescued the Endangered Species Act in the past. They will do it again if you ask your Senator to vote no to any changes to the Endangered Species Act.

Learn more and send an email or fax to your Senator.

If you have ever seen a Bald Eagle wing against the setting sun, spied a grey wolf stalking through the grass, watched a Grizzly Bear lumbering through the forest, or laughed at a Manatee playing in spring water, please spend 5 minutes of your time and make a difference.

Share your story about viewing an endangered species.

World Class Birding in Texas

Everything is big in Texas–even the birding! The Lone Star State is one of the top birding destinations in the world and Texas was the first state to create birding and wildlife viewing trails.

The diversity of Texas weather, geological land forms and the geographical placement of Texas on the Central Flyway means Texas is a paradise for birds and birders. One of the best-known birding areas in Texas is along the Gulf Coast. Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, High Island and Bolivar Flats, located on or close to Galveston Bay, are all premier birding spots on the Texas coast and are within 50 miles of Houston - the fourth largest city in the nation and the largest in the South. The King Ranch, the largest ranch in Texas, has been a safe haven for birds on the lower Gulf Coast for more than a century.

Big Bend Country is a mountainous area that hosts a wide variety of migrating and resident birds including hummingbirds and flycatchers. Big Bend National Park is the largest park in North America for migratory birds. Visit the Amistad National Recreation Area located along the Rio Grande River and view cliff side rookeries of great blue herons.

The Hill Country, home to many endangered species including the golden-cheeked warbler, is located in the middle of the Central Flyway. Depending on the time of year, birders can view migrating and resident herons, geese, ducks and bald eagles in this region of the state. Great horned owls and screech owls haunt the canyons of the Hill Country while red-tailed hawks circle above.

Birders visit the South Texas Plains region to view colorful subtropical species found nowhere else in North America. The national forests and grasslands of the Prairies and Lakes region, and the Big Thicket of the Piney Woods, echo with the calls of migrating shorebirds, nesting bald eagles and endangered osprey. Lake Meredith National Recreation Area in the Panhandle Plains provides critical habitat for a variety of water birds.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has released the new Heart of Texas, Panhandle Plains and Prairies and Pineywoods Trails maps to make birding easy in more regions of Texas. Please visit the TPWD site for current information.

Come to Texas and view the wildlife!
